Glittery Crescent City

Glittery Crescent City
One of the very first “throws” for most Carnival parades in the American south were necklaces made of glass beads. In recent years there has been a resurgence of throwing glass beads and pivoting Carnival throws to a more sustainable direction. They come in a huge variety of colors and I love using them in my work to remind us all of the joy that Mardi Gras is.
Multiple strands of beads in black/clear, gold/yellow and purple hang from one of the most popular symbols of New Orleans, its decorative sewer grates. Once you’ve seen one it’s hard to forget, they are throughout the city, also referred to as the Crescent City because of its location on the Mississippi River. The beads are flexible and move gently when touched. The wall piece can be used on a holiday tree, hung on the wall or incorporated into a wearable.
